Mi.
My dad just called, he has a good friend in FLA. No income, no insurance, doesn't file taxes...she's married to a guy on VA, but she is saying she's not eligible for her hubby's VA benefits of health insurance.

She went into healthcare.gov and obviously with no income, no taxes...etc., she was not eligible for subsidies.= and with no income cannot afford the plan with no income...she lost her job awhile back and has never found other employment...she's sick a lot.

Did Medicaid expand there in FLA? She would qualify for that here in Mi., but not sure about Fla.

Shaking my head...my dad and his soft heart is feeling for her and trying to help, but I doubt there's much anyone can tell this lady and I'm thinking she's probably one who falls right through the cracks.

Any suggestions? Just trying to tell my dad how to direct her, if it's even a possibility for anything..Im thinking nothing he can say to her, other than S&*% out of luck.

Thanks Dave...and yes it would've needed to expand Tim. Some states only take, for example, pregnant women or women who recently given birth...among other factors. Not always about zero income.

My dad needs to stop trying to save the world...lol. I'm already over this tidbit. Now he wants me to call her...ummmmmm no thank you.
Anyway....smh. Thanks Dave.

If an unemployed person really wants ACA coverage couldn't they commit to finding some type of employment that will pay them at at least 12,000.00 in 2015 and therefore be eligible for a full ACA subsidy for 2015 ? There are low paying jobs that will hire anybody and are always hiring if somebody really wants to make some money.

Another option would be one of the hospitals that offer free or low cost medical plans to the working poor or unemployed

It would have to be higher than that. In a non-expansion state, income between 100-138% FPL qualifies a person to get screwed twice, no Medicaid and no subsidy. 139-400% get subsidy so she'd need to make something over 16k to qualify for Silver 94.

Dave, that's not correct, they just need to be over 100% FPL to get the subsidy if Medicaid wasn't expanded-I've probably submitted 25 apps for people in that range during OEP and each received the subsidy.

I've explained to several people who were under the 100% FPL level that if they work some extra days to reach the threshold they essentially get anywhere from a $4K to $10K bonus by hitting the 100% FPL level (in the form of a subsidy-each of them said that made lots of sense, we'll have to see if it works in the real world.
