Release from IMO/carrier appointments

Hey everyone ... looking for some feedback. I'm newer to insurance ... licensed in Ca. last year (L&H, P&C). Initially the plan was to go independent and I signed up with two IMO's and was appointed with some carriers. Some delays in my life occurred and I never got off the ground. This year I'm ready to go and have now decided to go captive with a State Farm office so that I can get some experience behind me before I consider having a go at going independent.

One of the IMO's I was with released/terminated me with the carrier right away ... within one day.

The other IMO still has not released me a week later. I spoke with someone in that office today to see if I could get a timeframe of when I would be released as I can't start with State Farm or get appointed with them until I'm released with all other carriers and I wanted to be able to provide State Farm with a timeframe. I was advised that they are very backlogged and he couldn't give me a timeframe of when I would be released. He said that their business has "exploded" and that they are very backlogged and he didn't want to give me a timeframe because he didn't know how long it would be. In a previous email, I was told that they have to confirm that I have a zero debt balance with them and then they would send me an email with the release paperwork and instructions ... he confirmed this is the process and he said it usually only takes about 2-3 days but because they're backlogged it's taking much longer. I advised him that I've never written any business with them/carriers or purchased any leads with them and so I should not have any kind of debt balance. He said that doesn't mean that I don't owe money. He said that some carriers don't appoint you until you actually write business and some have appointment fees and take it out of your first commission, so I might have fees from the carrier(s). I was not aware this could be the case. I asked him if I could call the carriers myself to ask if I owed them any fees. He replied I could but that they would still have to confirm it themselves ... which, I understand ... at this point I just want to know and can find out faster myself.

When I asked if we're talking about weeks or days before they get to releasing me (it's already been a week) ... he still didn't say other than to say they're very backlogged. He also added that once they finally confirm if I have a balance or not and send me the email with the release paperwork and instructions that it would still take about a week after I complete that. I asked about contacting the carriers directly myself to get my appointments released/terminated. He said I could but advised against it. He said that if I do that, it could hurt me with those carriers if I decided to go independent in the future ... I'm not sure how it would hurt me though?? He said that their (IMO's) contracts have certain protections written in to protect me and again advised me against going directly to the carriers to get my appointments released/terminated.

So, how would this hurt me if I went directly to each carrier to get my appointments released/terminated? In your experience, what could the IMO be protecting me from if I were to go directly to the carriers to terminate my appointments? This doesn't make sense to me and I'm trying to understand.

Also, he said that I'm appointed with five carriers with them. I told him that when I check on the Ca. Dept. of Insurance website that it only shows two carriers. He advised me that it's because some carriers appoint you when you write your first policy with them but that I still have contracts with them, the IMO. So, am I actually appointed with these carriers or am I only appointed with the carriers that appear on the Ca. DOI website?

Thank you for any feedback/help you can offer.

You're only appointed with the carriers on the CA DOI website.

This all sounds like a bunch of BS from your IMO. Just call the carriers directly and terminate your contracts. There is no "release" because you're not being released to anyone. You're going to be captive and won't have any of those carriers anymore.

I have no idea why you'd want to go to State Farm in CA right now but that's a whole separate topic.

Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it. I thought the explanation I was given sounded shady but they're an IMO that is often recommended here in this forum so I wasn't sure if what my gut was telling me was accurate and I wanted some reassurance that what I was feeling was correct.

Yes, a whole separate topic :). I'm aware of all the issues here in Cali right now but I feel this might be the best route to go for now so that I can get some experience behind me. I'll be able to get some exposure and use my L&H and P&C license with them ... as an independent I was only looking to write life insurance. I'm just looking to gain some experience at the moment. Not sure if I'm making the right decision or not ... only time will tell. But I can change paths any time I choose as well, if this doesn't work in my favor or benefit me. I'll also be able to write in Oregon and Arizona as well, as this office is licensed in those states and I'll get a non-residence license for those two states.

Thanks again.

If you are going to State Farm you don't need any releases at all. You just need to terminate all your other contracts. Easy Peezy. You don't need your IMO for that. You just email the contracting department of each carrier individually.

So who is the "highly recommended" by this forum IMO that wouldn't help you with this? And if the answer is FexContracting some heads will roll. 😂

No need for heads to roll ... it is not FexContracting. :)

I didn't say "highly recommended" ... I said "they're an IMO that is often recommended here in this forum" ... and they are but I didn't want to throw them under the bus by naming them. :)

I'm new to this and what he was telling me didn't sound right ... which is why I posted my questions here. If they're that backlogged, he simply could have told me that I just need to contact the carrier directly to terminate my contracts and that I didn't even need to go through them to do this ... but instead he advised me against contacting the carriers directly. I explained to him that I was going to State Farm and that they wouldn't appoint me until this was taken care of. He said that was a State Farm policy because State Farm should be able to appoint me regardless of any other appointments.

Also, can you think of any reason why I would owe money to the IMO if I haven't written any business with them ... or to the carriers? I never bought leads through them ... and I would imagine those have to be paid for up front anyway? He said that just because I haven't written any business doesn't mean I don't owe money to the them or the carriers. He said that some carriers have fees ... I believe he said appointment fees ... but they take it out of my first commission and since I didn't write any business, I could still be responsible for any fees?? I've contacted the two carriers that I'm appointed with that appear on the Ca. DOI website and they didn't mention any money owed to them. They just told me what I needed to do to terminate my contract with them. And @Tahoe Ray stated that I'm only appointed with the carriers on the Ca. DOI website. So, it doesn't make sense that the IMO told me I could still owe money, even to the carriers that I'm not appointed with ... that those carriers appoint you when you write your first policy with them. Why could I possibly owe any money even to carriers I'm not even appointed with yet? He said that I'm contracted with the IMO and that I still have appointments with all five carriers even though only two show on the Ca. DOI ... because the other three don't appoint until you write business with them. It sounds like they aren't actually appointments then?? And yet, he said I'm appointed with five carriers with them even though only two show on the Ca. DOI. Makes no sense to me.

Thankful to be able to get some answers here though. I've contacted the two carriers that I'm appointed with and that appear on the Ca. DOI website and moving forward now. Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it.

Sounds fishy. I suspect you are not with a IMO that is ever recommended by the forum regulars.
The shady IMOs come on here and recommend themselves under three or four different profiles. You probably feel victim to that.

It's true that the only carriers that State Farm would know you appointed with are the ones showing on the Department of Insurance website. But there will be other carriers that you are appointed with, and I would be sure to terminate all of those. Better to be safe than sorry.

Oddly enough, I just received an email from the IMO stating that they have confirmed that I do not hold any debt and they will terminate my contracts with their hierarchy. Yesterday I was told they were very backlogged and couldn't give me a timeline for this and that they work in the order the requests are received and that it could still be a while before they get to me ... yet, today I get an email from them that it's taken care of. Wish they could have just told me this yesterday.

Also, the IMO is often recommended by forum regulars. I was pretty selective on which IMO I chose because I had read many nightmare stories here in this forum about having issues with IMO's, shady IMO's, etc. I also did my own research, as well as I could with what understanding I had at the time, being new to all of this. It worked out though. And I'm thankful I was able to get some answers here and I learned a few things.

Appreciate your feedback. Thanks

I will only add to @taand @Newby
I would request by email if I had any debt with the companies. Then term as suggested.

But they did confirm that I have no debt. I appreciate your suggestion though. After reading your comment, I was just about to reach out to the carriers to ask if I had any debt and I received the email from the IMO.

Thank you.

Cool, then send them a quiet thank you email and move on. Less burned bridges the better.
