SEO is fun. Really! Of course, I still only know about 10% of what I need to know, but folks like Val, Alston, New Guy, Sam, Long Island gal and others are helping... (And sorry if I missed anybody)

My question is regarding backlinks. I think I have an idea how to get them. Maybe not. But why do I have so few that are recognized by Google? Thanks.

Search Engine Backlinks
Google 4
Yahoo 1,506
AltaVista 468

The Google tool bar gives misleading information about the back links they know about. I think that they have also devalued the page rank. They have moved the PR on my main site from a 3 to a 1 over the last 3 years. But I have gotten more organic hits each year.

If you take advantage of Google Webmaster Tools you be able to see more of back links they know about. You will only be able to see this for your site(s).

Yahoo! and MSN will show most of your back links without your signing up for an account, but the Google Webmaster Tools are very useful.

Using Google Webmaster Tools means can help move your site up in the rankings. The benefits include the site maps feature which will help get your new and revised pages spidered much faster. You can also see if you have duplicated any titles or descriptions. There are other benefits that make signing up worthwhile.

I don't have any experience with that site.

I used this: Google site map generation info.

The installation is more than a little technical, but it generates a site map on a schedule you choose and pings Google when it's done.
It tells Google when you have edited content or created new content. This way Google can spider your new pages sooner and save its resources by spidering unchanged pages less frequently.

OK. Thanks.

And Val...I just sent you an email. I figured I already take up so much of your time with questions, I didn't want to send you another request! I thought you mentioned I have a sitemap but I forgot where to look.
