What are the advantages to the employer being in a large group opposed to a small group?

Re: Small Vs Large

In regards to Group Health, I would say it doesn't matter because the client doesn't get to choose its based on size ie number of employees in Maine Small Group uses community rates while Large Group uses actual claims history of the group in determining the rates.

This is a "wide-open" question that will attract a variety of issues and answers. So, what do you mean by "advantages" between the two, can you be more specific? For example, advantages in benefit designs, commissions to brokers, underwriting, etc.

Re: Small Vs Large

It all depends on the number of employees the employer has. The employer can't choose small group v. large group----the insurance company sets the parameters.

Actually if the employer changes eligibility requirements it may change the numbers. I was wondering with the new group laws if large group would be more beneficial for employers or if it is the same?

ask yourself that question and see how it sounds. Do you mean adding formally excluded employees? (union workers, temporary workers, part time workers, new hires?)

What answer are you looking for?

And what state is the group in? State laws will really play into any answer....

In Atlanta, company has a 180 day wait for new hires and are opening a new division which will add about 30 employees.

Group size, for purposes of differentiating between large/small, is not determined by "number of eligibles" that an employer may decide upon. Most, if not all applicable laws are written along the lines of "employed individuals over the past year" or something to that effect.

As for your Atlanta situation, not enough info to give you an answer. Does the current group have 50+ now? Will the employer operate the new "division" as a separate entity, or will they share the same? If the employer keeps the new entity legally separate, then with 30 lives it could be considered a small group.
