State Farm Tripled Our Rate

We've been with state farm now for almost 2 years.. when we first got our policy our month to month was 50 bucks for PLPD and we were very happy with that.. We have always paid our policy on time and well last year my husband supposedly backed into a parked car. I don't believe he did and they had previous damage and just was trying to pin it on him. He did the right thing, called the insurance company and told them and she said not to worry as he had a mil in coverage and that our rate would not go up. Come to find out they never even filed a claim for the "damage" anyways.. when it was time to renew in November, our bill had went up to about 75 a month.. they told us we lost our good driver discount and they had raised our rates because of an at fault accident.. I was pissed but it wasn't bad so I just paid it.. then all of a sudden I get my bill for January and it's for 150!!!!! I call and she said that it's for the at fault accident and when I told her that I can't afford that she just asked if I wanted to cancel the policy.. what in the hell!! What do I do now? I live in Michigan, btw.

Re: State Farm Tripled Our Rate.

I can't speak to why they said it wouldn't increase your rates, but when insurance companies determine rates for car insurance they evaluate the risk. Folks who have accidents are more prone to have more accidents than folks who don't, so they increase the premium to correlate with the risk.

If you have an otherwise spotless history you can probably find an independent agent to shop it for you and possibly get back closer to your original rate. No guarantees on that, but just because State Farm thinks your rate should be whatever they are telling you doesn't mean that another insurance company won't be willing to insure you for less. Not sure if we have any indy agents on here for Michigan, but if not, you can always pick up the phone book and look for an agency that has a yellow pages add and says they can shop your case with multiple carriers.

Re: State Farm Tripled Our Rate.

Ask them to review the dmv report with you and why you lost the good driver discount. Odds are, there is a different problem than the one you are thinking of.

The report may or may not be accurate. Sounds like there is a ticket or perhaps a different accident on there. I'm not sure about Michigan, but usually it requires 2 things to lose good driver (or a big thing or bodily injury), which is why it sounds like you don't have all of the details or they have incorrect reports.

I run into this a lot where people of redlight camera tickets that they didn't know about. Never got the notice, so they didn't know that the ticket existed or that their license was suspended or whatever.

With State Farm in Michigan, one violation or accident will cause them to drop the good driver discount. Also, if you are under the age of 25 that will also cause you to lose the "Steer Clear" discount they give too.

As recommended, contact your salesperson/agent and ask them to pull the dmv report and go over it with you in person and see exactly why. If they are unwilling I'd shop.

Re: State Farm Tripled Our Rate.

when I called she pulled up the policy and said first "oh you had a vehicle change" yeah same truck, different year.. and the same truck that we first started the policy out with.. then she said, "no tickets... it's the at fault" even though when we got our november policy it states that it only went up 30 dollars because of the accident but I can't find out why from november it went from 75 to 150 a month..
