As far as a cat, check out the dumpsters behind your local Burger King or McDonalds. Plenty of free cats back there. But don't waste your time checking out a Chinese restaurant. You won't find any cats back there. I have no idea why.

I remember about 50 years ago hearing about people rounding up cats and selling them to a lab.
