The Opening Book of Leads

Hi, Folks:

I'm in a bit of a pickle and could use some advice.

Currently I have a lot of preasure on me to produce a list of leads based on my "natural market". Its not that I don't have a goodly number of people who want to see me succeed, its just that I have very strong reservations about turning over a comprehensive list of choice leads, including all sorts of demographic information like occupation , birth dates and names of spouse and kids.

What brings this to a head is that I don't see the same sort of energy surrounding my succeeding or getting organized. But when it comes to that list of golden names I can't believe the emphasis its getting. I have all kinds of dark suspicions growing in the back of my head, like "once they have those leads, what the heck do they need ME for?"; know what I mean? I don't have business cards, or a desk of my own....hell, I haven't even had my contract approved, but boy-oh-boy they sure want that list of 200 names and addresses!!

I could really use some help with this.

Best Wishes,

Bruce

Contrary to popular belief, they are not going to work that list after you leave. At least any with half a brain won't.

They want you to get out there and start working. Some want you to succeed, some just want you to sell some friends and family to get their overrides and take over the policies once you leave.

Sure. Buy a list :) I don't normally go under 1,000, but I can cut you a deal.

Hey Bud, I went through this krap at Prudential thirty years ago. They wanted 400 names then. Some kind of a Rube Goldberg path to making money. I had no "natural market" I did have a wife and three small children living with my in-laws. I had to succeed. In a class of 12 I was the only one to write business. How? I gave them their 400 names out of the phone book and I canvassed for business. I hope there is a special place in hell for these big company managers...

For myself, I know that I will be scaping things together for myself. Yes, I appreciate what they are saying about the natural market. I also appreciate about how peoples minds really work given a particular Socio-economic level, background, and so forth. Not everyone I know is so compassionate about helping people gewt ahead. In fact, there is a lot of "crab-in-the-bucket" in which people working to move ahead are held-back by their pals who fear said over-achiever will get "too big for his britches". At any rate I don't mind the idea of working hard and I can give them their names and addresses and phone numbers. I just don't like the way they keep harping on this when they don't hit on other things anywhere near as hard. Know what I mean?

BTW: Is it really the company that pushes this agenda, or does the company leave it to the local managers to hammer on this compulsively? Anyone?

Best Wishes,

Bruce
