The Physician's Risk in HCR

February 17, 2015

In rural parts of Illinois, the doctors are increasingly turning against what they call "ObamaCare". I didn't hear this from clients last year, but all of a sudden, a few who live out in the countryside are saying that their doctors are not accepting new ObamaCare patients.

Since all major medical is ObamaCare, perhaps these doctors are just referring to ACA subsidized patients. Maybe they got burned last year by the risks described in this thread?

That's funny?....Hospitals like it..

As Obamacare Boosts Tenet Healthcare, Jeb Bush And Hillary Clinton Win - Forbes

Hardly any providers like Obamacrack, especially the ones that accept Medicaid. Rural hospitals are feeling the crunch even more where a high degree of their patient base is Medicare and Medicaid.

In the last 4 years no less than 7 Georgia rural hospitals have closed. In some cases the nearest hospital is a 3 hour drive and more will close over the next few years. Georgia is not the only state where this is happening. Rural (and even urban) hospitals are closing.

Two Atlanta hospitals closed their maternity departments in the last few years due to the number of Medicaid patients.

Obamacrack has driven a stake in the heart of Hill-Burton.

Please explain how it can be so good for one Hospital chain and so bad for another??? Seriously what gives??

AC....if they are in net docs/facilities they are NOT allowed to turn away clients based on where they purchased the policy.

I had one yesterday, in BCBSTX PPO, tell my client they were not in her network because they dont take "metal plans". Uh huh. That went over well. I yelled then provider services called. ;)

The CBO says that the ObamaCare Fairy redistributed $10 Billion taxpayer dollars last year, in the form of ACA Subsidies.

As is always the case in these Ponzi schemes, there are winners and losers. I guess it depends on if you prepare.

For instance, many agents came out BETTER, thanks to the Obamacare Fairy. Those that didn't re-configure had to move on. An agent-friend died from anger/stress/depression because he didn't reconfigure, or move on.

Might be the same with Doctors, Hospitals, Neighborhood Doc-n-boxes, etc..

I had dozens of those complaints all through the year, and they're not stopping. Doctors told their staff "we're not taking obamacare" for whatever reason, so they parrot to patients without knowing what they are saying.

I call in, say "It's not obamacare, it's the X plan with Y carrier and Z network, you participate with Y carrier and Z network, do you not?" They say yes, I say "so then what's the problem?" and they take the client.

Works every time. It scares me that there are people out there without brokers that legitimately can't get taken care of "because they have obamacare" and the doctor decided to make a political statement.

It's not always political, Ray.

Early on in 2014 (and possibly now as well) carriers had not updated their networks, had not sent new contracts to providers and many providers had no idea which networks (if any) they were in.

Others signed contracts without looking at the reimbursement (especially for HMO's) until after the fact. Those people were perfectly within their right to develop a form of "blue flu" and tell new patients to get on their waiting list.

Same thing happens with newly minted Medicare eligibles.

.

OH BULL.

If you sign a contract without looking at reimbursement, I have zero sympathy for you. You signed it, now honor it. They are not in their rights.

Yes, this is regional. Texas had new HMO networks appear for ACA, new contracts were signed. The reimbursement is miserably low. But they had the opportunity to get out of the PPO and shockingly, none of them did. NOW they want to use their "political ideals" on their patients and refuse to see "Obamacare" patients. That's exactly what's happening. Those are the phone calls I am making. Its not an HMO issue. Its not a contracting issue. Its a political statement.

With a 90 day grace period on premiums and the carriers only have to pay for medical care in the first 30 days of the grace period, one can see the docs/ facilities concern.

Here in AZ, an awful lot of doctors have been telling their patients they won't accept plans purchased on the exchanges. I have had a large number of phone calls about that. In many cases, the doctors' offices will cave if it's a current patient, and/or if enough ruckus is raised. The doctors have figured out which plans/networks are the worst, and I heard from a carrier that they are beginning to leave those networks when the contracts come up for renewal.
