Was Thinking Captive W/ Farmers but Not Sure Anymore...

Hello all! I am a long time lurker (6 months or so) and a first time poster.

I started looking into insurance back in November when I was approached by a Farmers recruiter. I come from a background in real estate (5 years) then B2B telecom sales (~4 years), so a new challenge in sales was very intriguing to me.

I got the ball rolling with farmers in the intervening months (got licensed for P&C and L&H in both Kansas and Missouri, started their first round of training and I have started developing a business plan) but after reading through the posts on here I am not so sure I want to stick with Farmers, or any single company for that matter. I know that in this area they are very competitive for standard auto rates but tend to wipe out that savings when it comes to home owner rates.

All that said, I am seriously considering either trying to get on with an existing independent agency or starting my own. I think by getting on with an existing indy I could learn some valuable skills that would cost me more to learn on my own. But, I learned on my own doing real estate and I was very successful until late 2008, obviously. Ultimately, the goal would be to have my own full service agency with offerings for commercial and personal P&C, life and possibly health.

I have found while doing real estate and telco sales that the markets I tend to work with the best are small- to mid-size business owners and people in their mid-20s to 40 (I'm right in the middle of this) and 55+ age range. For some reason I have a hard time connecting with people in the 40-55 age range...

Having literally spent days reading through this forum I am getting the impression that the best place to start on my own would be through L&H, specifically med sups, and then eventually moving into P&C. (2-3 years L&H and then start bringing in some P&C)

I know nobody can decide what is right for me besides me but with all that in mind does that sound like the best route to go?

Sorry for the meandering and rambling post but I am really just looking for some direction here...

Choose what you want to specialize in and work in place where you can get experience. Find an indy in that field that will bring you on board and become a sponge, soak up as much info as possible.
