What Are Your Thoughts on Working for Local Independent Companies

My area has a lot of little (or not so little, don't really know) local companies that sell Health/Life insurance in Hendersonville/Asheville, North Carolina area. My question is, is it worth contacting them to see if they have any openings for Health/Life agents or is it better to stay away from the mom and pop type of insurance agencies when starting out (just freshly got my insurance license last Friday).

I really want to start working, but I want to go about this the right way. So, what you all think? Just stick with the big boys or contact some of these local companies as well?

That is not a good idea. Its a sad commentary, but there are a lot of crooks out there. You're better off sticking with larger companies that have systems of checks and balances in place.

You could also reach out to any friends you have in the business, that you trust, and see if they can get you hired on.

Most mom and pop shops will be 100% commission though. If you need a base, than stay with the big boys.

The indy route is better long term imo. You should interview with ALL mom and pops, mid size GA, and a large captive and see what they all say and which will fit with your style and what you want. Just make sure to get whatever they SAY in WRITING (and read it closely)!

I would think the mom and pops would be the best place to learn and grow as long as it was a good one.
