What Do You Know About Working for Shelter Insurance?

I interviewed with Shelter 2 weeks ago. I asked why the agent left and was told "good guy-just not a salesman". I think he had office for 3 years. Everything sounded good- $2200 monthly base plus commission. I think had to sell like 5 p/c first month and 10 life second month or something like that. Got 125 leads every other month. They pay for office expenses. The goal is for you to be bringing enough money in to eventually no commission. Once you are established the office is yours. She said it takes about 4/5 years. It would be door knocking and whatever else you needed to do to get the business. 2 weeks training in MO for p/c and then few months later 2 weeks in mo for life/health training.

I was asked back for 2nd interview, but I decided not to move forward. I am just starting in this business and jumping into owning my own place was just overwhelming. If running your own brick and mortar is a dream than I say go for it...

This is good information. Thank you for the post. I have some follow up questions for you if you don't mind.

You said that you were offered back for a second interview. From what you posted I gather that you are new to the insurance industry, did they seem to be bothered by that? Also did they have any specific requirements? College degree, certain sales experience, do you have to put up an investment, etc?

Lastly, did you apply for the position on their website? If not, how? And how long did it take them to respond?

Yes, I am new. I had my resume posted online and they contacted me. Being new was not a problem for the DM. One thing I had going for me was I am from this area (rural) and she found that the people here didnt accept outsiders as quickly, so she really wants someone from here.

College degree was not a focus. I have 2 years of college credits, but she liked my sales background and experiences. There is no major investment. They pay for the building, etc and a base. Yes, you have goals you must hit, but from what I could gather they will help you. The reason I didnt move forward was because I am so new. I didnt like the idea of walking around town knocking on doors. You do have to pay for some leads. They provide 125 every other month-a postcard is sent out and then you follow up or knock on door. Plus, they sell everything- even have a bank and get involved in mortgages. Heck, life and health is enough for me starting out let alone P/C and the other stuff they have available. I live in small town pop about 11,000 and there is an insurance company it seems like on every other block. I had to go with my gut and it was saying not for me at this time. Just thinking about taking over a building/office gave me a rash. Too much to soon for me..:goofy:
