What is a Multi-line Insurance Agency?

I was wondering if the term multi-line insurance agency just means you're an "Independent Agency"

Meaning are all multi-line insurance agency "Independent" or not?

A multi-line agency handles multiple lines, life, health, personal lines, commercial, etc.

It may or may not be captive to a carrier that offers all these products.
