When did you realize it was time to go "ALL IN"?

At what point did you realize it was time to ditch the salary or captive position to go all in on yourself?

This thought goes through my mind endlessly but the sell out in me always convinces me to stay with the salary role. I am finally being forced to make a decision to either continue on the salary path with no clear career or salary advancement opportunity or I go ALL IN on myself and become independent. I have always been able to do both but I not able to do so anymore.

After 18 yrs as a carrier rep with 6 different carriers (each one left the market and/or were sold) I got tired of being RIF'd and decided to take control of my destiny.

That was 27 years ago and never looked back.

I think its both a business decision and a personal financial position. Everyone thinks of the business end of it, but few consider their personal savings, other sources of income, etc before making this very important decision.

In other words:
  • Do you have other sources of income
  • How much in savings do you have set aside
  • How will you pay rent/mortgage during the transition
  • What are you realistic financial needs and can they be realized as an Independent
If you are speaking of leaving a captive and setting up your own Independent Shop - I would warn you that its a very long road and probably should only be attempted by someone with previous insurance experience (which it sounds like you have.)

Best of Luck

After the P&C agency I was at, After John Hancock, Changed the contract yet again. The broker should have just written them on an Etch a Sketch.

Late on a Friday. I said I could not sign that. He said sign it or clear out your desk. So I come in with a couple of boxes and tell my then Fiance, three months from our wedding day that we were paying 100%, That I have no place to work.

Then it was on like Donkey Kong!

The first day I was Insurance licensed I quit my job of 19 years that paid $85,000 plus free company Custom Chevy 4x4, free health insurance, free gas, and free use of All motorcycles, jet ski's, ATV's, etc.

Everyone thought I had lost my mind. But I was just burnt out. And in hindsight it was the best decision I ever made.

In the beginning, when people found out how much I was working and how little I was making, they couldn't believe it. Now that I have established myself, people have trouble believing how much I make for how little I work.
