Where to Prospect? Scripts, What To Say?

New agent here. I am ready and willing to go out and knock doors (face to face), walk into businesses (face to face) and cold call (via phone). How do I choose areas, businesses and people to call? And most importantly, what do I say? If I understand right, the purpose of initial contact is to set the appointment, not to make the sale. With businesses, do I build relationships or just set the appointment? I sell all lines of insurance in CA. Thank you.

Forum can give you some advice. But finding a mentor who can field training you is very important to new agent.
 
You can't build a relationship until the appointment is set.

There should NOT be a business relationship until business has taken place. Otherwise, you're wasting your time.

Your objective is to help people solve problems by using your products and services. Until you do that, you're working for free.
