Why Are Republicans Opposed to the Mandate?

After all, it is a conservative concept.

So argues the author in this Slate article.

Makes sense.

After all, we can't really opt-out of "free" care available to all via the ER. So why should we be able to opt-out of contributing to the system, either through purchasing insurance or paying taxes?
:swoon:

None other than Mitt Romney supported the concept in Mass. Surely he never would support a genuine left-wing concept.

Conservatives believe that deadbeats should pay their own way. Well, isn't that exactly what the mandate supports?

So why all the backlash from the Republicans??

Makes one wonder.

And why would insurance brokers be against the concept??

Mainly because where this could go. This is the first mandate that taxes you for being, not doing something. Everything else requires an activity that can or can't be done by choice. It's not so much about health insurance with this aspect, it's about the concept behind enforcement.

The "Free Care" you talk about is not 100% accurate. Many of the uninursed in the country are middle income citizens who have lost their coverage by no reason of their own. I lost my coverage because my employer could no longer afford the premiums. I have a history of cancer, diabetes and hypertension and was completely uninsurable until the recent change in the system. The cost for my annual oncologist is app $500 with the bloodwork. The local ER bills me if I go there. IT is not free. Change your TV channel from FOX and you will see the world in a more accurate light. I am on this forum because I sell FE part time and have for 26 years. I work 50+ hours per week on my Full time job in addition to my insurance sales. MY wife also has terminal illness and we are out thousands upon thousands of dollars each year ($20,000 in 2006) in medical expenses. Pardom me for not having any tolerance for those who give in to the propaganda flowing through the airwaves.

They are opposed to Obamacrap. Such items as mandates and death panels, etc, are something that is easily understandable and most objectionable to the dopey public to get them to also oppose Obamacrap.

It is pushed by AHIP & the carriers, supported by actuaries. But it is the provision thought most likely to be found unconstitutional. If Obamacare is not separable (which is widely reported), getting that piece rejected by SCOTUS effectively repeals the whole law.

I'm against this not as an insurance broker, but as a citizen of the United States. As has been stated already, this is a mandate to purchase something you may not want. What's next?

Furthermore, you are misguided if you think this means everyone will pay into the system. Remember, families who make up to $93,600 will get assistance with a portion of their premium. That assistance comes in the form of tax dollars from someone else. Lastly, when (not if) this becomes a clusterf!@#, that will be the reason to scrap the law for a new and improved law called single payer.

After all, it is a conservative concept.

Does anyone know what happens if your company is paying for your insurance? For example, a family is making $55K annually, but their employer pays for 100% of coverage. They receive a statement showing they have been covered all 12 months. Does the family receive their tax credit at the end of the year, or do they have to show that they paid for it?
