I am wondering how many, if any of you had gone from getting your insurance license to becoming independent right away without going captive first or getting local training but was trained just from the internet and phone with another agent. ....Also, if any of you maybe got local training by proposing to split your commission with an independent agent. Another thing, if you did that, would you say, knowing what you know now that you really could have just learned on your own, internet , phone without local training? Thanks. I really appreciate any response. I have to make a decision soon.

This must have been something you've been contemplating for quite some time.

Anyway, your going to find that pretty much no one made it to where they are today with out some level of support.

I really really doubt there is anyone that made it in this business by self teaching everything and just going all out solo.

There's way to many people trying to take advantage of you and way to many issues you have to over come.

Am very serious. Right after I got my license, I went to a local Aflac and they had some government acct..I went out with one lady who was suppose to train me and I brought some people to the table at the water dept and from that she was able to get leads and she did not want to take me..another time she left me..i just decided to leave..then another time I signed up with someone, it was like Primerica but the guy on the phone spoke so fast that I just could not seem to learn..I went to my friend's house who was wanting to buy insurance, and I was trying to ask him questions..anyway make a long story short..I just found him too fast talking and I couldn't seem to learn from him. ..they did mostly term through AIG. So I couldn't decide where to go, I asked for advice..was close to deciding btwn Mutual of Omaha or Monumental ..the thing that stopped me was I want to be able to give my family the best deal so that is why I wanted to go independent, be able to shop and not be stuck with one company..looks like I need to though..from my indecisiveness I ended up working somewhere else but now I really want to sell, have flexibility in my schedule and sell insurance, just wondering if I could jump into being independent and learning throught the web and phone advice...Thanks for your advice and input.

Although I did start captive I pretty much had to learn the business by myself.

I showed up at the office on my first day expecting training and leads. My "training" existed of being handed a Medicare Guide book. I said I have questions, they said don't worry about it you will pick it up as you go along.

I was then handed a voter registration list. That was my "leads" because it had dates of birth for each person. I was suppose to pick out the people who were 65 and older and give them a call and ask them if they received the "valuable information" that was sent to them. (No information was ever sent.)

When they said no I was to tell them that I will be "in their area" on such and such a day and ask if it was okay for me to stop by and drop it off. (Like I expected them to wait at home that entire day until I got there.) The whole idea was to get in the door at all costs and to do a Medicare Review.

Do I need to tell you how well that worked out?

With the proper help an agent can be successful starting as an independent. It is a must if working the senior market today.

Agree that if you don't know what you are doing ahead of time then you more then likely will get taken advantage of.

One especially has to know about CONTRACTING LANGUAGE - what to look for (or ask) PRIOR to getting contracted w/ any agency (like not assigning commissions etc). Think this is one of the most important things a new agent should learn. Then atleast they can better WEIGH OUT a contract before signing on w/ an agency.

Personally don't think this is an easy business to get into flying solo unless one has mentors already in the business. Although this forum can help A LOT in that regard.
