I know there's been a good amount of talk/consternation on this site about 1-800-MEDICARE. Here's my latest experience - can anyone relate? And what are your thoughts?
I'm following up with a Turning 65 Internet lead prospect that I spoke with about a week ago. They tell me that they got "20 phone calls" (probably wasnt that many - maybe 12-14), so they just called up 1-800-MEDICARE to see what they would say. The prospect claims the rep on the line told them the names of two companies (AARP and American Republic) and said she should "go with one of these because they are usually the best". So, now I call her, the prospect, this week and she says, predictably, I want either AARP or American Republic since Medicare told me those were best. The two are not in the ballpark for competitive rates for any plans in her zip code - Am Rep is miles away from the ballpark. So, now I am trying to educate her, although I could just sell her AARP, but I'm up against what "Medicare said". Plus, how many other people just hear that and do exactly what the rep says without even checking rates/plans elsewhere?
What's more, this is the third time in the last two weeks that someone has told me, under different circumstances, that 1-800-Medicare recommended AARP to them. Talk about in bed with the Fed. Gov't!
The last thing Medicare-eligibles need is Wanda in the Medicare call room making an uninformed insurance recommendation because AARP had a pretty commercial during the 6:30 news last night.
Has anyone else had this happen?
