Pretty much directed to agency owners, but all comments/opinions welcomed.

Does the agency name matter?

I've noticed everyone uses ABC Insurance Agency. Are there anyone else using a different name for their Agency? Is it a must to end in Insurance Agency to let everyone know you do insurance?

Does it matter as much today with all the internet searches and ways to find insurance?

State rules apply here.

In CA, you can't end your business name with 'insurance'. So, I can't be DJS Insurance, I have to be either DJS Insurance Services or DJS Insurance Agency, take your pick (others work, but these are the common ones.

If I want to be 'Bay Area Insurance Services', then I have to file a fictitious business name, clear it through the DOI, a lot of extra work and expense. Okay, not overwhelming, but it doesn't seem to gain me much.

To add to what Dan posted, in CA (and I assume some other states) even if you use your initials you have to file a DBA:

J.A. Jones Insurance Services.

No I am not ashamed of selling insurance, but I have a different business name because I had a different business plan, but i am focusing on insurance now and seeing if i should change my business name.

yes for my case we do real estate services as well but we currently split the corporation into two corporation per our cpa's instruction so my agency is fully insurance now and my partner will be running the real estate side, so i was wondering if i should keep XXX consulting or make it XXX insurance agency and XXX realty corp
