Assurant Pulling Out of New Mexico and Other Assurant News

Actually, Aetna withdrew from Alabama on Aug. 1.

Alabama is a very litigious state with very high rates as a result and BCBSAL has the market sewn up good 'n tight.

I'm canceling my license there too. Does that count?

Assurant withdrew from NM because NM has instituted very tight MLR's that the company considers excessive especially in a market with a relatively small insurance buying population that is already dominated by HMO's.

Humana withdrew from Iowa because it floods too much.
 
Assurant will be pulling out of New Mexico. The last day to submit an application is August 16th with an effective date of August 28th.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Mexico announced today that it is pulling out of the New Mexico health insurance exchange. The company's request for a 51% rate increase for 2016 was denied by the state. In response, BCBS-NM lowered that request all the way down to an 11% increase. The state didn't allow that either. Go figure...
