I developed great working relationships with several local auto dealerships when I started out as an independent agent. In particular, I got to know the Finance Manager(s) and some of the top salesmen at the Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Ford dealerships in town.
They all had rental departments that I used to arrange rentals for most of my customers as long as they would offer a rate comparable to Enterprise or the other large rental agencies. My customers got better service, cleaner and newer rental vehicles and I got as many as 60+ referrals each month after we got the ball rolling.
When one of my policyholders had a total loss auto claim and they were interested in buying a Toyota, Honda, Mazda or Ford, I would refer them if I felt it was appropriate. But I always advised my customer to shop around for the best deal even if I did give a referral.
I spent a LOT of time building those relationships as well as following up with my customers to make sure they never got screwed over, but it worked out very well for everyone involved.
