Biden and noncompete.

Here is the thing about employee investments... it cant be the only reason for staying.

Totally agree.

I have a son, <30yo, that is in a competitive industry. These guys bounce around. I hear him and his friends talk about what they want from the employers. Yes, training is part of it. But quality of work life is also a big draw if not a bigger draw. Leave time, remote work, flex time, scheduling freedom. Money is a big part of their quality of life. Companies are trying to keep them. These young people work to live, they don't live to work. They are smarter than I was.

That remains to be seen...Of course. we won't be around see the world they leave behind... I honestly do not think we have been smarter than our parents. The world is not better than they left us.. JMHO..

I understand.

The group I am talking about are + - 30yo. All making 6 figures. Home owners, travel the world, zero student debt because most have no college, they are inclusive because they just are not as a woke virtue signal. They get stuff done.

I know a lot of other young Veterans just like them. Every generation has their slackers. I never was one, I am now, wish now I had done more slacking.

Our parents, like us, grew up and survived in a different time. Are things easier no? In a lot of ways absolutely. Hell I just bought a pair of tennis shoes that you dont even have to tie. Hell, I didn't even have to go to the shoe store and write a check. I used my phone, I keep in my back pocket, and nope didn't have to wait a couple of months. A couple of days. That said, I wouldn't want to start over today.

So how are you doing? How old is your little daughter now?

I have an extra 10 years on them, but imo, that is the way it should be.

A career should enable your life, not run your life.

A job is a means to live the life you want... the job is not your life.

And loyalty is a 2 way street. "Giving me a job" is not a favor and does not earn blind loyalty. Agreeing to hire me is a benefit to both of us... and if you want to keep me you better act like it. If you want respect, lead with respect.

A lot of good men where walked all over because of generational ideals about "loyalty" and the "right thing". They didnt put themselves and their family first because they didnt want to be seen as disloyal... and they got an arm up their ass as a reward.

Self preservation aside, that is also the exact opposite of a free market economy. Staying at the same job and giving blind loyalty to a crap employer is not what the free market theory is based on. But it was great for the big corporations, and you better believe they helped perpetuate the ideal of company loyalty... it kept wages suppressed for the past 4 decades.

I agree on all those points.

Just one add to the last part. If I am the employer of a crappy employee I want to be able to fire their ass on the spot. Show up late or on your phone multiple times, bye.

I would make a terrible boss and an even worse employee.

But luckily I found this career out of construction.

My son's best friend just bought a home your way. Now my son is looking to find some investment property out there. If so you can buy me a beer or three.

And there's no argument for the morality of it that doesn't have to assume it. All attempts reduce to some version of "might makes right."

But we're talking about non-competes, here.
Assuming employees outnumber the corporations they work for, freedom of choice benefits the majority by a huge margin.
