Blue Shield of California notifies agents that their SSN was exposed
Exposure, Healthcare Sector, U.S.
Feb 182014
Blue Shield of California is notifying some agents that their Tax Identification Numbers – which are often the agents’ Social Security Numbers – were accidentally disclosed to some of the agents’ clients who attempted to pay their bills online.
In a letter dated today, BSC writes that the problem with SSN exposure existed between December 20, 2013 and January 16, 2014, but that the SSN were not presented in a format that would make the number immediately recognizable as a Social Security number. Nor, writes, BSC, do they have indication of misuse of the agents’ names and SSN.
To assist their agents, BSC offered them a year of free credit monitoring with Experian.
Blue Shield exposes Social Security numbers on public web page »
Blue Shield of California sent notices to their appointed insurance agents that the agent’s Social Security number had been displayed during the course of member’s online payment. The letter from Blue Shield, dated February 18, notifying agents of the breach to their private personal information does not mention how many agents had their Social Security number’s compromised. While I was not shocked to receive the letter informing me that my personal information was displayed, I was angry that Blue Shield let this happen.
