Can You Sell P&C Part Time?

I have a P&C license, but only because it was required for my day job. Before, I hear about "you can't sell P&C part time, et al...I am just looking for a way to capitalize on having this designation to potentially get my feet wet and learn the business and make some extra income during nights and weekends. If you were doing it part time...what would be the best way to do it with no experience? and what steps to take?

If you find an established agency that can get you appointed and can assist your clients with the service work then it may work. The hardest part may be finding an agency to agree to you working part time where they would benefit. Maybe a 50% new and 25% renewal split paid to you would make it worth it for an agency to work with you. Working nights and weekends you could focus on car dealerships.

thanks captive guy for your input, interesting in that I have a very good friend that is a GM for a Chevy dealership. What would be a good approach to take with him, specific questions to ask him?

When I started at Farmers, I held my day job for over a year. You just have to hope people will leave a message for you to call back.

It can be done, difficult, but can be done.

I have two guys who work part time were full time agents but kept their license. They focus on car dealerships and being avaliable late at night and also realtors/mortgage brokers who send referrals. Family and friends is also an ok source for part time. If you are looking for supplemental income just look for good referral sources that can fit into the time you work.

You will get that response because it is the only honest answer. Why would a customer choose to work with somebody that has no experience and is focused on his "day job" so he cannot service their account during business hours. No company will appoint you and no decent agency that I know of would is willing to invest the time and resources it takes to train a part time agent with little upside.

Well I have an appt setup for drinks tmrw night with a good friend that has had an agency for 6 years that his dad built up for years before he passed away suddenly. He seems very interested in talking about me doing just that (servicing the accounts during business hours for me during the day) and starting a dialogue. Before you rush to judgement, I am not like most...8 years of sales experience in multiple industries with over $30 mil in career sales. Compared to the normal new agent, my upside is a lot higher to pull this off.

The sales side of the business would not be my concern, it would be the chargebacks, E&O exposure and general hand holding that would turn me off. Selling insurance to people buying cars that don't already have an agent has such a low retention level it whipes out the best thing about selling insurance... residual income/renewal revenue. You came on here asking questions but ignoring the answers, you seem destined to learn a lot of this the hard way so I will let you do that.
