Can You Sell P&C Part Time?

Bertolinoins: "Selling insurance to people buying cars that don't already have an agent has such a low retention level it whipes out the best thing about selling insurance... residual income/renewal revenue."

very true!

of all types of customers, car buyers that aren't existing clients are the 2nd worst for not staying on the books. (only thing worse are people who say they need insurance to satisfy their employer-they take that binder to work and never make another payment).

the problem with dealerships is that the customer only thinks of auto insurance as an afterthought. they need a binder, so they go with what's convenient and can be written quickly, just so they can drive off the lot .

it is usually not until a month later that they realize their car payment & insurance payments are beyond their means. at that point, they shop around everywhere for a cheaper rate.

I have a P&C license, but only because it was required for my day job. Before, I hear about "you can't sell P&C part time, et al...I am just looking for a way to capitalize on having this designation to potentially get my feet wet and learn the business and make some extra income during nights and weekends. If you were doing it part time...what would be the best way to do it with no experience? and what steps to take?

Out of curiousity, what is your regular job? I think it is possible if you have the right situation. I do agree with Bertolinoins that the servicing of accounts will be the issue, but with the right technology and "job situation" I can see it being a possibilty. Tell us more....

I sell supplemental insurance for growers thru crop insurance agencies. I have iMac at home office and iPhone, scanner/copier/fax machine. Not sure what other technology I would need to get.

So you have the ability to respond to requests and do some service work from the road when you have time at your day job? I would say as long as you are very organized and "train" clients to contact you a certain way (email, text, cell, etc) then I can see it working. At least until you get a sizable book established...p&c can bring on a lot of service work.

correct, i would be able to return calls/emails/texts as needed from the road as I work in a outside sales role. working under my buddies agency i would think most of that service work could be handled by them, right?

I honestly believe in unconventional thinking given you have the drive to make it work. With the proper help from the agency staff you would simply be like a producer.

I do think if you grow a sizable book you may have to adjust the way you do things but for starters why not give it a go?

thanks captive guy for your input, interesting in that I have a very good friend that is a GM for a Chevy dealership. What would be a good approach to take with him, specific questions to ask him?

Go to an agency appointed with GMAC:D seriously though they have great discounts for new purchasers of GM vehicles as well as employees

That would be the idea, to transition into it full time in say maybe 5 years from now and run another branch for my buddy here in town.
