Claim Problems

Hey everyone,

I had a fire at my house and I am having issues with the insurance company.

First of all, they chose a subpar contractor for me and the work done in the house is horrendous.

Second, I was not given an estimate before the work started and was not updated when the estimate changed. I was surprised to see the estimate had gone up $70,000 when I asked for it the second time.

Third, I have not received any additional living expenses for the increased spending from living in a hotel, dining out more often, etc. I have sent them the worksheet and all of the receipts and everything.

What do you think I should do?

Step 1 - Call your agent and discuss this with them.
Step 2 - Get a new contractor to complete the work.
Step 3 - Don't worry about the estimate, that is the insurance companies job. You don't care if it cost $70K more, unless you go through your policy limits.
Step 4 - Ask the insurance company about additional living expenses. They usually take care of this pretty quickly. Staying in a hotel may not be reasonable if this is taking any length of time though.

You have an assigned adjuster, let them deal with this for you. That is their job. If you hired a public adjuster, then you may run into some issues, since the insurance company has to go behind them and do it over again, slowing it down significantly.
