What happens with the annuities if the company goes out of business? Are the annuities backed by the same security agency as the insurance policies?

Ask folks that bought Baldwin United years ago. The contract reverts to the minimum guarantee and the state guaranty fund kicks in if the reserves of the bailing carrier are insufficient to credit the guaranteed rates.
