Creative Marketing Ideas

Sometimes the best marketing comes from the strangest places. Here's an example from another industry (real estate) in my neighborhood:

There's a realtor that lives down the street from me in Seattle who grows pumpkins every year in his front yard. The pumpkins he grows are not ordinary pumpkins - they're MASSIVE state fair winning pumpkins. A few years ago, one weighed in at 1223 pounds.

Now you can image that a yard full of these monsters attracts some attention. People drive by. People talk about it. People take pictures. The local news covers it. And he's set up a website with a web-cam where you can watch the pumpkins grow, Pumpkincamera.com.

At each of these contact points, there's always a mention that he's a local realtor and if you like the neighborhood, drop him a line. From the pumpkin website, he links to a photo gallery of the neighborhood and listings of homes for sale. He's turned his hobby into a huge marketing machine for his real estate business.

Over the years, he's developed a reputation as being "the guy" for home sales in the neighborhood. Sure, he does other marketing, but I imagine the pumpkins gave him a huge leg up.
