Dental Help?!

Had a call today from a student, who needs some very extensive dental work done...

He doesn't have health insurance nor dental insurance. He claims he gets "cheap" check ups at school, so he just needs something for dental. He stated that his school can give him very cheap teeth cleaning but we're talking about 2 root canals and possibly 4 - 5 teeth that need pulling...

Most plans that I can think of don't cover major services for 6-12 months after the plan is in state and most the ones I've seen offer a max of 2500 a year benefit. Obviously with pulling, root canals and replacements he's looking at a heck of a lot more then 2.5k.

Parents aren't going to be much help here either with footing the bill.

Is there a state run program or anything that could help this guy out? I've checked the web but can't come across much past Healthy Families but we all know 18 and under to cover...

Does anyone know of something that would help take care of these costs? Mexico is not an option either since the average cost of RC there is about 500, plus 250 per tooth pulled.

Thanks for posting.

Some how that doesn't surprise me... I've known a lot of people to get it done in Mexico, never personally. I'll forward this to him and see if he'll give that a go. Doubt he could even afford that. I found that some dentists from Family Health Center of San Diego do pricing on a sliding scale. He doesn't earn anything since he's a full time student. He might be able to qualify for free dental work. I'll shot that to him as well. Not much more I can do.

Anthem Dental SelectHMO offers many major services at co-pay without six month waiting period. The only major services requiring 6-month wait are extraction and root planing. See if this might fit.

Also, because it's an HMO, it has not annual maximum benefit limit.

Dave is right. This is his best option. He can also inquire if the dentist offers CARE credit so he can finance the cost after insurance. He doesn't have many options. Medi-Cal has been cutting back on dental benefits too and I have never heard of free dental offices in CA

is there a discount air fare to San Diego and the bus to Tijuana iavailabel to prospects?

Seems to me Jethro Bodine took all the seats out of Mr Drysdale's plane and put in benches to accommodate more people. You can probably hitch a ride on Jed's truck for the rest of the trip.
