Is there any agent here who does only Commercial on P&C side, and not Personal?

Do the clients not ask you to do their Personal (Home, Auto) as well? How do you handle such situations?

I will guarentee you that If I quote any part of a households insurance needs, I will go after everything.

There are agencies that only do commercial insurance. Or if thy are big agencies they will have department that specialize in different type.

You have to remember commercial insurance is a whole different animal than P&C. If you have a difficult risk you must deal with an experience commercial broker.

Many agencies only do commercial lines, they usually just refer their business to another agency or have an agreement in place with a personal lines agency. A commercial lines only agency is not a bad way to go, the jack of all trades, master of none are not the most profitable or successful agencies out there. The agencies that focus on a niche do extremely well. This is no different than a Doctor who specializes or in any industry out there, the key to cornering the market is doing one thing really well and you will establish yourself as the go to person for that niche.

It does make sense to go after all the business. However, as suggested by many on this forum to focus on one line - I chose "Life" - couple of years ago. However, I feel I'm passing on a few bucks by not doing P&C.

Most of the Life policies I sell are to small business owners. Some of them are not happy with their P&C agents, and so were looking for a change.

Life still will be my core LOB. I can do some commercial P&C in addition to Life, but I really dont want to get into auto and homes. Looks like I may have to contact with a local agent to refer auto/home, if thats the way I lead in future.

Sort of, I only do commercial on the P&C side. Yes, I get a crossover to personal lines but I flip it to one of our personal lines people, who only sell personal lines. With that said, personal lines can cost you a big commercial account if you are not careful.

You might think it off balance but our Entire Agency is 90% commercial lines. We really do not write personal unless we have snagged their business first and we will not write you if you don't own a business.

AgencyEquity is right... niche is key. Our agency targets Contractors, Garages, Manufacturers and Hotels. Nothing else really... we have seen great success over the last 15 years because of it.

Plus its always a kick to see the Jack of all trades agencies horrid attempt to properly insure risks we specialize in. Most of the personal that comes our way we send to a personal lines only agency ...
