I actually do use them. My home service (debit) carrier, provides them at no charge, but you can order them from VistaPrint pretty cheap, too.
IMO, they're pretty much a waste of time if you're just blanketing a neighborhood. I usually try to cold knock 1 or 2 doors next to the one I'm visiting. I use the hangers to get one more shot after getting no answer at the door. Every now and then, I get a call from one that results in a sale. Once they're a client, they're also a referral source. So it's worth the few extra seconds it takes to hang one.
