Easy P&C Appointments in CA?

Im a new startup ... sorry ... what's right of refusal and how do you express that to them?

Are you new to the indepent agency side or are you new to insurance entirely. If you are completely green then disregard what I said and find a good MGA like WIAA or Networked. Thos organizations will hold your hand a bit and have an interest in your success.

If you are just new to the independent side... go to a carrier and tell them you will only sell their Personal lines product and they will get first look at all business... you will only market it elsewhere if they decline or "refuse" the account. Also have a strong business plan, marketing plan and marketing budget in place. If you agree to this type of a deal... make sure they are competitive in your area.

Im new to the independent side of things ... looking for companies to get appointments with ... especially a preferred company who will give me a chance even though i haven't wrote any business yet ... non standard company is secured but looking for the other markets as well as home owner's.

Awesome stuff Bert. I checked your website out, too. Good stuff. Do internet leads work well with personal/ commercial?

also, bert, is there a quick way for me to check rates(competitiveness) in bama and tennessee? i don't want to chase down a carrier to find that they are not even close in these states.

First right of refusal is what takes the indepence out of being an independent. It effectively makes you a captive agent to that carrier for the bulk of your business.

If you go this route, and sometimes you have to, be very careful of who you pick and make sure they target the same market you do.

I agree, but as a scratch agency without the money to join a cluster, you gotta do what you gotta do. I have a dozen PL appointments but 90% of the business goes to 3 or 4 carriers as they are the major players in area. A agent in my area could do just fine with only Allied, Travelers or Mercury. MetLife is great on auto but quite high on home. CIG is the opposite so I often split accounts between the two. The rest of my appointments don't see much business as they are not compeditive. Options are good as you never know when the other carriers will heat up... but you only need a few good markets to compete.

How long do they retain the right of first refusal? After a few years, do you gain the ability to shop the coverage without seeing if that first carrier will take it first?

How exactly is the carrier going to know that you are always giving them the first right of refusal? How can they monitor with who and what you are writing?
