Hey guys,

When you make a first phone call to your potential client & he or she is busy and responses with something like
1) I am in the middle of cooking dinner
2) I am eating dinner right now
3) I am very busy this week with a wedding in the family or this week doesn't look good"
4) I am going out of town this Friday won't be back until Wednesday
5) My spouse works at night & I have to talk to him to find out his availability
6) Sometimes they will have a reason why they are busy for the next 3 days.

How do you guys respond to these?

Do you recommend saying, "I understand you are busy right now what is a good time to call you back to make an appointment?"

Thanks in advance,

Funguy

1 and 2 -- No problem, I just want to set an appointment to talk anyway. How's tomorrow at 2?

3 -- That's OK, Mr Jones. All I need is 10 minutes of your time. How's tomorrow at 2 sound?"

4 -- That's fine, Mr Jones. I only need 10 minutes of your time. Can we meet around 10am Friday before you hit the road?"

5 - That's OK, Mr Jones. Are you both off Saturday? I only need 10 minutes of your time. How's Sat at 11?

You want to work hard getting these people either (a) committed to an appt, or (b) tell you after a rebuttal or two they aren't interested.

What about the first door knock (cold).
*"I already have life insurance"
* "My kids are going to take care of that"
* "I"m going to be cremated"
* "My grandson is with State Farm and takes care of our stuff like that "
* "I have insurance through my retirement with the state"
* " I have some cash set aside for that "

There's been some decent replies posted, but they've missed the most important point. First you need to determine whether it's a legitimate excuse, or a "polite" way to get rid of you.

Be bold. Ask (with a smile), "Are you just saying that to get rid of me?" Their reply will give you a clue!

If you are going to cold door knock, what do you expect? How would YOU respond to a stranger knocking on your door asking about insurance?

Great response Rearden. Try to get them to tell you to bug off or get them to say they just are not interested, get it straight from the horses' mouth.

I was out knocking and hit a door, showed the guy the card, told him we had't received a reply from him. I asked him if he had any questions about how it worked. He told me "you didn't receive a reply because I'm not interested, ". Slammed the door.
He looked as nasty as his disposition.
I should have walked away as soon as he opened the door and saw the kisser.
Lol!

I was out just trying to find a live one,you never know unless you give it a shot.

Most who look for a needle in a haystack , or as you say a "live one" by cold calling/knocking ("giving it a shot") don't last in this business. Just too tough, the odds are way, way too low.

You need a real honest-to-god marketing plan - and the trump to pay for it.
