First Time List Buyer, Where to Look?

I've been doing a lot of in person marketing recently and I want to try and supplement that with some good old fashion direct mail. Could some wise forum reader perhaps point me in the right direction with these questions:

1) Seen people mention that lists can be purchased or rented - is there a difference?

2) Compiled or not compiled, is one better?

3) How specific can we get? If I want a list of people who have purchased financial products over 50$ by postcard, am I able to do that?

I'm looking to purchase a list today, and I've been told they can get pretty specific. Please let me know of what your experiences thus far have been!

Call Josh Stacy at Affordable Marketing Lists | Marketing Lists | Cold Calling Lists | Direct Mail Lists | Insurance Lists. He's MedicarePlanSolutions on the forum.

1) The difference between purchased and rented usually just means they want you on the honor system to be paying them if you'll use it more than the times specified by the license. The list won't magically disappear and no one is going to chase you after the money.

2) A compiled list is more accurate because it's aggregated from multiple sources. My lists are compiled from over 300 sources.

3) You can get pretty specific, but it comes at a "cost". For example, you can target incomes, but there aren't any great ways to source that information. For example, there is no central registry of public records for incomes, but we do have a reasonably accurate way to source home values, so often times a compiled list will use home value as a way of estimating an income. That can be fantastically misleading because poor people can live in expensive houses and people who live in inexpensive homes can be quite wealthy.

Age, address, phone number, and home value all tend to be fairly accurate. Income can be a little tough, and it goes down hill from there to a degree.

If you want a really specific list, you might be disappointed with the results. There are many list brokers that claim to have lists that are accurate with a lot of seemingly specific filters, but if there isn't a good way to source it then you're usually going to find yourself in a situation where the quality of the data isn't what you'd like it to be. I can't imagine a list of people who have purchased financial products over $50 as being particularly accurate.

Shoot me an e-mail with your info if you'd like me to give you a call.
