Freedom !!!!

I finally took the step of leaving my captive company and going independent yesterday. Got contracted with a couple companies already. Waiting on several others. These companies are slower than molasses. It is great knowing that I'll be able to write the best contract for the client as opposed to what the captive company offers. Got nothing bad to say about them though. They taught me the business and had reasonable products pretty much accross the board. Heck, I was a manager with them for several years. The only thing that concerns me is I'll have to be carefull not to fish too much and work too little.

Question: Do most of you have offices, or do you work from home? Also, if you have an office, is it a retail office (high visability for walk in traffic), or more out of the way (more or less someplace to go so that you don't have the distractions of being in a home office ie. wife, cat, dog, kids)?

Re: Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations! I started at home and didn't move until I out grew my space.

Re: Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what I was thinking of doing. But, I think I can get office space in an office building cheap. Just wanted advice as to whether it's worth spending money for an office in a building. Course I didn't really think about the fact that then I'd need a phone, internet, electricity, furniture, etc. I was really just looking at the rent. Although, if I force myself to go in and work from there it may take away distractions, and it might increase my production enough to more than cover the cost. What does everyone else think?

I recieved good advice about working from home...One make sure you have a space and tell your family that you wouldn't be called if you were at the office and that space is your office...Get up get dressed go out to thecar drive around the block and then enter your home office now your in work mode...

Re: Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did some more checking. Rent runs around $350. Phone & internet $100. $450 total. Only question is would that create one extra sale per month?

It will give you motivation knowing your $450 behind at the begining of the month.

Re: Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find that the office definitely pays for itself. You get more referals and more drop ins than you ever did before.

Re: Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does the rent include utilities (heat, air, etc.)? Does the phone and internet include a fax line? How about furnishings? If you are expecting walk-in traffic and people to come to your office for appointments, you'll need some nice furnishings.

I've worked from an office and from home. Tried the home first, then rented office space for two years, then came back home. For me, I prefer home. If you are selling Med Supps, Life, etc. you will have very little, if any, walk-in traffic.

Much of my work is done over the phone and through the mail/email so it really makes no difference where I work. Your situation may be different. Since I had very few people actually come to the office, I felt it was a waste of money (and I was spending $1,000 per month on rent, utilities and phone). Your situation may be very different so an office could be exactly what you need.

Whichever route you decide, I wish you the best and congratulations on the move.

Re: Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good move on going indi but if you are counting on walk in traffic dont hold your breath. The truth is when you leave the office you will just come home and get in front of your laptop at the home office. Good luck.

Re: Freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not counting on any walk in traffic at all. I ve done mainly cold calling from lists and referrals for years. That's what I plan to do now. Not much changes as far as marketing. Really the only change is carrier, and where to work from.
