Going Indie

Ok so I have been with Farmers for a year, and what a year it has been, made a lot of sales made some great contacts and I am over all excited about this career.

With that being said it has also been the hardest year I have ever existed on this planet.

I don't believe I will be signing a contract with Farmers, you are in most aspects their employee that spends your own money to stay employed and I don't really like the idea of it.

So I want to go indie any suggestions on Carriers that I should try to get appointed with? (safeco, The General Agent) I'm not really sure what all is out there.

What state are you in?
What type of insurance are you trying to write?
What are the demographics for your area?
Are you going retail?

Unless you have EO and can bring some volume to each of the carriers its going to be hard to get going.

Most start out with a wholesaler (Superior Access, Insurance Noodle etc etc) and with experience you can go direct.

The toughest part maybe finding your EO.........thats going to set you back at least 2k per year..........most EO providers want 3 years before they will even look at you.

There is loads on this forum regarding the Wholesalers.........

Nevada, but will possibly be moving to California.

I would like to write P/C and Life.

As far as retail, I don't believe so, I have found office space for a great deal.

Demo is all over the place for my area honestly from 65K-150k 70% Caucasian, 20% Latin, 10% African American.

As for the E&O insurance I have shopped around and your write most people don't want to look at me but I can handle the 2k/yr.

Thanks for the advice on the wholesalers, I was looking into them but didn't know any actual wholesalers to look for. Do you recommend any one in particular?

The carriers will depend on the state you plan to operate in.

P/C and Life are two different animals and I would recommend only taking on one at a time.

Your Demographics require preferred companies and they will be though to acquire as a new agent.

Take a look at Tryton insurance they may be an option for you.
