I am selling my captive agency and want to go independent and I need some help. I've read thru some older posts but couldn't find what I'm looking for.

Is it better to work for an independent agency to build up a base of clients first (even though you're giving a cut to the broker)?

As an independent agent selling mostly P&C can I sell from my home office? If so, which companies will allow that?

Which independent companies are most likely to appoint me as a brand new independent agent?

Thanks in advance for any info/advice.

Why you leaving Allstate? How long have you been with them? How hard is it to sell and agency?

Going Indy

Well, I'm finally making the switch over to the dark side. I sold my captive agency and starting yesterday I am an independent agent.

I will be focusing on P&C so if you're a Life/Health agent send me a PM with your info so I have a place to send referalls when I get them.

Also, if you're a captive agent and have some commercial insurance you can't write please keep me in mind. I am currently licensed to sell in 44 states and I'm working on the other 6 (or 13, I always forget if we have 50 or 57 states?).

I but a small agency 18 months ago and since then auto rates have gone up 4 times (about 30% on the last adjustment). I loved the company, the people were all great but it just wasn't working out for me.

I think, just as others have mentioned, if you want to succeed with them you need to buy a big book or have a lot of money in savings. If I didn't have a family to support than I would probably have stayed with them and rode out the next 2 years of Top Ramen.

I ended up selling my agency back to the company because there's not really a market right now, at least not in Utah where our rates suck. The few people that called on it were more interested in buying larger BOB's.

Through insurance agents mainly difficult kinds of insurance, for example the life insurance, demanding special preparation and the seller, and the potential customer extend.
Other not less important sales channel of insurance services is use of partners, first of all banks.
