Hi, I am taking over my father's independent insurance agency with 8 years of experience in the business myself. He still just uses filing cabinets and I was wondering how much I should pay for an MS Access Database to be created?

why would you want to pay someone to build a database, especially an MS Access database.

that's like saying, "how much should I pay for someone to build a Commodore 64 PC for me."

You would be surprised to know how many custom applications have been built with an access front end. As long as you don't have a lot of concurrent users accessing your database you could do fine with access, specially if you're not so fond of monthly subscriptions or someone else hosting your data and then going out of business...

man, I sure miss those days.. C64, 1541 drive and 300bd modem and playing ultima and bards tale rpgs.

Haha, I laughed out lout at that one- played those on my Apple II+, along with Wizardry and a whole bunch of Lode Runner...

I'm sure there are millions of custom applications that have been built with ms access.

That's not the point.

There have been millions of radios built with vacuum tubes. Does that mean we should be using vacuum tubes to build radios today?

There were millions of horses and buggies built that did a fine job of getting people from one place to another. Does that mean we should all use horses and buggies today?

gimmeabreak.

I appreciate the points made in your post. I've been looking at the choices and I really don't want to have my stuff on someone's server someplace. This afternoon I was thinking of just using Access. Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

YIO gets a lot of praise in this forum and it's nothing more than an access database in its core so don't listen to the "gurus" that don't have a clue about what they're talking about. Basically, what you need is a good robust open source database like MySql as the back end of your system and do your queries and reports in MS Access (this is called splitting your database). It's a cheaper alternative to a custom database using asp.net services, PHP ,etc. Google it and you'll find lots of useful info on the subject. If I were you, I would do a free trial on a cloud service that offered a layout you felt comfortable with and try to mimic that in Access. Then hire someone to split your database and use MySql (which by the way is free) and bingo! Then, web hosting in Apache or similar. Or, I believe someone in this forum is an expert in sugar and could help you with building something to your needs...
