Good Time to Start Working on Website??

I'm new to insurance, working on Life/Health license and hope to actually have my license in next 2-3 months. Part of my marketing strategy includes having a website and generating my own leads. My question is should I start working on my site now to try to get a head start?? Should I wait until I have my license? Any other suggestions on how I can best use my time between now and when I have license in hand welcome as well...

Read as much as you can...study everything,,talk to some ins agents that are already doing this..Just having a website will not produce any leads,,,U must drive traffic to your site,,

Generating leads from a website isn't a "strategy", it's a "tactic". Before you worry about tactics, you need a strategy - i.e. what market are you attacking, and what value do you bring?

If it is a worthwhile tactic, I would spend 90% of my time figuring out how to get traffic to it, and 10% "working on it".

Thanks to you both for the reply. Perhaps I am "putting the cart before the horse" by worrying about a website at this point. Sounds like a better use of my time would be to narrow down the type of insurance I'd want to offer. So far I've been able to connect with one person off the board who is in my area, very nice guy. I need to get further advise/info on this subject. From what I can tell so far I'm interested in the Senior market (for Med Sup's) and Life Insurance in general.

I'm still pretty new to internet marketing myself but I have learned a few things:

- Older sites rank better so starting your site now will give you a little advantage

- you need lots of links to your site to rank so the sooner your site is up the sooner those links start coming in

- good content increases your ranking so if you start writing an article/blog post every day you'll be 2-3 months ahead when you get your license

There are many others much more qualified than me and I'm sure they will be critiquing my reply very shortly. I would just warn you to not spend too much time on your website. I found that I had a lot of fun working on my site and seeing it rise in the rankings and some days I would spend all day on the internet. You don't make any money on the internet, you make it on the phone or in the clients house.

If you are going to work the senior market / med supps...a website probably wont help you now. You are best to find an expert on med supps...look up Frank Stastny on the board, he is very knowledgeable on med supps, and will help you out.
I was not paid for this endorsement

Thanks to all for the tip(s). I've noticed other posts from the person you mentioned and would welcome any help I can get. I see a website as one part of my marketing, hopefully in time generating leads by using SEO to drive traffic, and also as a way to reinforce other marketing tactics. I agree Seniors would not be the best target for web based marketing. But they may have children/grandchildren helping them with their search that would be more likely to use that method..?

I agree. However, since you are targeting seniors, perhaps good ole-fashioned marketing may work better. But don't count out those who are tech savvy or who do get help from family members or friends.

If anything, your website can serve as just a virtual business card. You could just have one for those who want more information.
