Having a Business Name As An Independent Agent

I'm going it independent after 4 years of taking it in the rear from an agency as it would appear many do when first starting out.

I'm getting some business cards made. I was going to do "(My last name) Financial" as a business name. I've decided not to bother with the LLC until I'm rocking and rolling and have some agents under me.

My question is; Can I just throw a business name on a card and pass it out to the world? Or could that come back to bite me?

Also, any known compliance issues in using the word "Financial" in my business name without being security licensed?

Check with your specific home state Department of Insurance.

I have had a DBA for years. I will bet not one client would remember it. However, many know their Insurance agent is Wino Blues. Or just Wino.

I started out highlighting the DBA and putting my name down with the contact info. Now it is:

Wino Blues
Your Independent Insurance Agent
since 1985

Then all the contact blah, blah, blah

I mostly forget to leave business cards on my F2F deals. However, I rarely forget to text and email my F2F or phone deals. With a reminder to put me in their contacts.

All IMohsoHO

You can have a biz name listed however you want with no issues, and still operate contractually with the ins companies under your ssn#. Most agents don't need to license their business as the agent, just be licensed personally. Alot less headache and expense. Some choose to get the biz licensed, sometimes its actually needed.

I just use my middle and last name. I mean, if I was going to take on agents at some point (I don't want to be an upline) it may be different.. but I think people appreciate knowing they're going to talk to Travis instead of going to "Price Insurance Company"

Much less expensive when you need to get licensed in 35+ states too!
