Here's My Story......

I'm 26 years old from Jax, FL. I have completed the 40-Hour pre-licensing course and I hope to take the state exam this month. I have completing some college courses with an emphasis in business. I own another business as well but its kinda slow right now. My main source of income is SSI, but I want a career that allows me to live, not a check that allows me to exist. I'm in a wheelchair with Cerebral Palsy, but I don't let it stop me. Trust me. I'm a go-getter

A lot of you advocate going independent from the jump. I like that idea but my question is: Where does the training come from? Last week I et with a guy from LM but after reding the info here, that isn't a good idea. I also spoke with a gentleman with Allstate who told me to take the class and come back and he would get me up and rolling.

I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction. I don't know what to sell, Life or Health? I want to start with something easy to learn/sell, yet lucrative.

There are many people (including myself) who are in danger of losing services of state-funded programs that provide home care services. Is there a niche for me in this area, or would a pre-existing condition kill the deal? I also have quite a few contacts with small business owners that I could probably sell packages too. Any advice? Sorry for the long post....:)

James:

With technology today you can sell life, health or both... right over the telephone... no need to even leave the house.

There are a number of agents on the forum who can point you in the right direction as to appointments with companies to sell, decent contracts for compensation as well as some training.

If you go with health ins you might wish to think about joining the IHIAA, as they offer lots of product and sales ideas, as well as discounts on product that far outweigh the dues. (20 bucks mo).

Your business contacts will serve to be valuable once you gain some product knowledge, as these will be great prospects for indiv or group health as well as life ins.

Do lots of reading here and you can hone the direction of which type of products you wish to sell. You will find lots of helpful souls here, anxious to answer any of your questions. Welcome to the forum and here is to wishing you great success in the business over the years.

Perfectly said SportsNut.

James I am happy to see that psychologically you have already overcame your infliction. Being pro-active as opposed to re-active is the best way to enter this business. I look forward to your future posts....

Going independent is a good move. However, training is important. My first suggestion would be to contract with a voluntary benefits carrier that has a great training program. You most likely will not stay long term but they generally train you on how to develop new business... i.e. prospecting, closing & etc... The other option is to find a good GA or IMO that has true structure & training systems. Good luck.

Any reccomendations on a voluntary benefits carrier?

Voluntary carriers like Aflac, Allstate or Colonial, are typically good places to start with. Voluntary companies are a hit and miss when it comes to training. If you live in an area with strong management for the respective company, then you should receive the training that you are looking for. I suggest contacting these different companies and interviewing them first, to find out if they will be a good fit for you. Please let me know if there is anything else that I can do to help. Good luck.
