Home Town

I moved back home a few years ago, after working this market steadily for a few years from a fairly short distance.

Just curious if anyone thinks that you have an advantage by being in your hometown particularly if it's where you want to live. I just wondered if the advantage was more of an emotional one.

On the flip side, does anyone think there is an advantage in not being from the area you're working?

It definitely is in some communities. Some communities are very close knit and rely on the old boy net work. In my area it is an advantage to be a hometown boy probably lesser so in a larger community.

I suppose it depends on the size of the town, how long you were away, and how much people remember about you from your early days.

I left Knoxville in 1975 and never cared to move back. I have lived in Chattanooga, Birmingham and now Atlanta (for 30 years). I have spent more time here than in the town where I grew up.

FWIW, I have found it easier to make inroads with folks who do not know me. They are, for whatever reason, much quicker to respond to my personal questions about health history & budget than people where I grew up. I have tried from time to time to secure clients in Knoxville but while they are willing to chat or, if I am in town, let me buy them a beer, they are reluctant to open up about their financial needs.

At least that is my experience.

Someone like Bill3173 probably never got sloppy drunk and barfed on their rug during a party so he doesn't have the baggage to deal with like some of us.

Griffin Ga is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone. I think it is a good thing. I use to welcome all the new homeowners or new people moving into Griffin Ga for years...I try and get around and make sure everyone knows who I am and what I'm about...

Local people want to deal with local people....

I can't tell you how many appts I go on, where they tell me,,you know I knew your grandfather and know you dad...Only in a small town..

I live in a suburb of Denver and even though I don't filter my leads to counties or zip codes when I get a lead in the metro area I make a point to bring up that I'm local, of course it helps you but not enough for me to restrict the market I work

I feel more stifled in my hometown. I like being thrown in to something new as I feel like there is more territory to cover. Call me Napoleon.
