I have decided to become an insurance agent and I am wondering about something. I have never been to college..other than real estate school...and I have been out of the work place for 10 years while raising my kids. I want to get started in the field now because my kids are all in school(all 6 of them) and my husband has a crippling back disorder that is getting worse every year. He has suffered in pain for the last 3 and we doubt he can make it much longer.

I am looking to get involved with an agency that can help train me on the ends and outs of this business. But I worry that my lack of college will keep me from finding an agency that is not some sort of mlm or scam. I don't have the money to throw away to a bad company.(not that anyone does)

Anyone have any names of companies that hire w/o college? Or any advice for me? Thanks so much!

ladyvic - 6 kids in school (must take up some of your time) and a husband that is close to being unable to work ?

Things to think about :
1- how much disposable money do i have available and how long can WE (you & husband) go without any income coming in for at least 1 month mnimum.
2- how much time can i devote to this, if WE have some money, while dealing with 6 kids? Can he take care of them while you devote time to this?
3- What type of insurance do you plan on marketing?

My opinion only, but the quickest means to earn money is with health insurance. I do not deal in Final Expense, but if you have some money to INVEST in your marketing, this might be an avenue for you to pursue.

I am an independent producer that deals with health and supp's. I DO NOT recruit, but if you want to talk to someone that has some experience I would be more than happy to give you some pointers. I DO NOT converse via e-mail, I prefer to talk one on one via the phone, so feel free to pick my brain. E-mail me your # if you want to talk. If not, I wish you all the best. Good Luck. Ladyvic,

About your lack of a college degree, I would ask you this do people turn to you today for advice? After getting your license and learning about your products you will probably know much more than the average citizen. That being said you mentioned you do not have money to throw away at mlm or scam, I take from that the money is tight now you will have additional expenses of just physically getting to appointments, telephone usage etc...A company will look at you if they think you are teachable and want this enough and here is the big one if they think you know enough people. I would think with 6 children you know many of their friends parents you have a compelling story of why people want to purchase insurance (your husbands back problem) I assume he did not have adequete Disability coverage or this might not be the situation you are in currently (don't feel bad most people do not have adequete DI coverage).

Some of the best insurance agents I have ever met know less about their products, and industry then I do. What they are is a people person and know people need what they sell and meet with people and tell them their story and some buy some don't and they rinse and repeat sales is all about seeing enough people.

Well I must say that I have been in the business for the last five years and it took me this long to understand that not all of the MLM models are bad. I had to find a company that did not have requirements for me to go get other people and would let me have a good contract and let me have access to a lot of compaines, I found that in the company I am with now. #1 I think your question looks like you would like some type of base pay? If that is correct in the sales side that is very hard to find. If you would like to do back office work then you may want to contact local agent in your area. And maybe try craigslist, sometimes agents place the small jobs they have on there.

I work at home I use a power dialer and I telemarket to comsumers in my local area and I love this business I love being able to stay at home, why go work for someone when you could stay at home after taking the kids to school make some calls books some appointments and set your own agenda?

I would love to help just ask any question and I will try and respond. What would you really like to do?

Success in any industry (including this one) is all about dedication. If you are caring, diligent, and followup on leads, you will succeed!

Good luck! Maybe even get some of those kids to make some cold calls for you - not a bad idea?? :)

Thanks so much for all the helpful advice. And no we do not have DI. I have many friends and family(I have 28 nieces and nephews alone) and I am very into my church and school so I thought that I might have a little edge there. I am not looking for base pay(I understand how tough it can be to get that) and I do have income coming in from my spouse at this time. I will have alot of questions soon and I thank you in advance for helping me with them.

Ladyvic,

Every piece of information you been given here is very good. ONe question to ask yourself is "how much time can i spend on building my business"? And also, how much money do you want to make. If you have 50-70 hrs./ wk. to spend on building your business (remember that there are no "weekends" in this industry, you will work EVERY weekend) then you could be successful.

I would say to remember the learning curve. It will take you time to learn. The fact that you do not have a college education certainly does not negate you from being successful.

Find a company, find a mentor and get to work.

GL to you.

Here is exactly where a college education will get you in the insurance business.

...

Do you see those three periods? It will get you about that far. College means nothing as far as selling insurance goes. If you went to a HUGE college where you met a lot of people and you learned how to interact with people and make friends that will be a help, but as far as what you learn in the classroom? Useless.

Most of the successful agents I know never went to college. College is good for one thing. It proves that you can read, write, and learn. If you can do that already then I wouldn't worry about that at all!

You have six school aged children. This gives you a VAST pool of potential clients. That is a great start.

My advice is to give it a shot. Go with a company like Mutual of Omaha or New York Life that has a good training model. Make sure to meet with the guy or gal who runs the office that you will be working out of to see how seriously they take their training. I would make my decision based on that alone.

You will have to get licensed in life and health pretty quickly, which is not that hard, and they will eventually want you to get you series 6,63,65 etc.

Go for it, and good luck!

Selling insurance does not need college degree. But you do have to pass the exam.
Any business can be successful if you keep doing/learning it.
