Incarcerated in Prison

Ok, if somebody is in Prison, how do I get a signature? Send it to the prison and have them sign and have it sent back in the mail?

Call the prison and ask about visiting hours. Then specifically ask them if an insurance agent would be considered a professional visit. I had an orphan policyholders wife contact me once the policyholders wanted to access the policy. I called the jail was told about visiting hours that I would be meeting with the prisoner behind glass. When I got to the jail they told me I should have told them it was a professional visit as there was more liberal visiting hours plus I would meet with my client in a room.

Obviously good news bad news as it made getting the signatures easier. The bad news was being escorted far into the jail and being put in a room with a prisoner someone I had never met before.

Called on people I never met before that I wish would have been in a place as secure as a prison.

Excuse my ignorance but why couldn't a prisoner be written with someone like Monumental with no POS, if they qualified health wise?

And what address would you use?

I think stuff like that falls into the "Duh" category. While it may not be on the app, they sort of assume you know better.

You might want to check with the carriers first before getting the client's hopes up about being able to get coverage on an incarcerated person. Even a GI carrier may not allow the policy to be issued until after they are released from jail. Secondly, if they will allow a policy to be issued on a prisoner, make sure you have EVERYTHING documented.

The mortality risk of an incarcerated person is very high, and as far as i'm aware, no carrier will offer coverage on a prisoner until after they have been released from prison.

It's not the kind of case I would want to take on to begin with either way, but good luck if you can get anything.

I know it has to be a family member. I was only kidding about that. But writing an inmate is not good business for the insurance company nor the agent.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am talking to his father about the coverage for his son who is in prison and he would be the owner and payer. I would just need the signature and the RIGHT company that would insure him. I will start making some calls to underwriting. Monumental requires you to be present with the applicant thus I would have to go to the prison. Not exactly what I want to do.

We used to be able to write them. I think the company was Congress.

While not a real indicator. I have/had about 6 inmates insured. As far as I know none has digested a shank. Life expectancy has to be worse for some overweight, smoker, 2 years out of a by pass on O2.

Do what Peter said, a professional visit. I doubt anyone is going to give this guy first day coverage and no way he could do a PHI. If Monumental will give him first day coverage, do right by him and do the visit.

If it is a local prison I will do that. He might be out of state. This is a new client and just doing my DD to give him the correct information. First things first, find the right company that will allow coverage. 360 said Vantis would write him. He can sign the application and send it back.
