Individual Dental

I have been using First Commonwealth. Their DHMO was great benefit wise. No deductible, no annual max, no waiting period, but tiny network. That just changed, so now we use the PPO.

In Illinois, we have had success selling Humana C550 Plan for individuals in need of immediate dental work and the Ameritas individual dental plans for clients who want coverage similar to an employer plan. As several people have already stated, individual dental plan premiums are often close to the actual benefits so we usually recommend using HSA funds if a client has an HSA plan instead of enrolling in an individual dental plan in most cases.

I use a discount plan. Careington. I show the client how traditional dental insurance works, with the premium cost, maximum annual benefit, and waiting periods. Then I show them Careington's $6.95 monthly dental plan with no max and no waiting. I give them the rate schedule and an article from Forbe's magazine with the headline Dental Discount Plans Beat Insurance. I bring to the appointment a list of the 100 dentists nearest them (usually all within a ten mile radius in my area). I tell them my dentist takes this plan--she does--and has told me that it's better than the 10% senior discount she gives her patients.

I make a small $30 commission on top of the med supp and drug plan comp, putting my commission over $400 for the deal (I write mostly T65). More importantly, I've met the client's need. I used to just tell them to ask their dentist for a senior discount because most dental plans aren't very good, but didn't want some other agent to come in behind me to meet that need and flip the med supp in the process.

If you're an insurance agent or broker who thinks individual dental plans are a complete waste of money and not worth your time, I think, coming from someone who has it and who has had to pay completely out-of-pocket for dental care and major dental work, you should HIGHLY reconsider your stance on individual dental plans.

I'm currently covered under Assurant Health's indemnity/FFS dental plan, their Plus plan, and have found it worth every penny. I can't begin to tell you just how much money their dental plan has saved me since I've had it. I wish I've had it a lot sooner than I did rather than pay for everything entirely out of pocket.

And coming from someone who works in the healthcare industry and has worked in a dental office, I can honestly tell you that dental care and major dental work doesn't come cheap. It's better for people to have some form of dental insurance or a discount plan like Careington versus nothing at all.
