Insurance alternatives to HMO plan

I am trying to assist my son and learn about his insurance options. He has an HMO plan though his small group employer in the state of Virginia with 50 % of his premium paid by the company. He is in his 40s, has undergone major intestinal surgery and he has a congenital anomaly that could complicate any future surgery. His aim is to obtain insurance that provides at least partial coverage for potential medical and surgical care outside his current network.
One possibility is trying to have his company switch to a PPO (or even a POS) plan. Is another alternative signing up for individual insurance through healthcare.gov and opt out of his employer coverage? What other options could be considered? What are the pros and cons of the alternatives listed? Thanks for your input.

Suggestion, try to keep his employer’s plan but switch to PPO and pay the premium. Unless your son is making 20k a year, obamacare won’t go far

Thanks for your input. His employer currently only offers a HMO plan. Any suggestions for how he should approach his employer about offering a PPO plan?
