Is There a Future in Health Insurance Sales Anymore?

I've been reading the threads for a while now. I initially had this grand idea to sell only Med Sups to the 65+ crowd. Then I thought well, since Government is well on to mandating health insurance by 2014, why not join the rest of you guys and use my sales skills and make some money selling health insurance to all. Haven't gotten my license yet but, now I am wondering if I should even do this. Honestly, is there a future in Health Insurance sales anymore? Am I just waisting my time? What advice would you give a person who is thinking about getting a Health/Life License?

Tough one. So many variables. If you're just a novice, I would find another product. If you have been around a while and have a proven system, you should be OK...Maybe.

I like Turner at the #2 pick. No real surprise. He's steady and I believe ready to play 25-35 minutes as a rookie.

It's very hard to say what the next 6 months to 2 1/2 years will bring. There will be many changes, many agents will leave the business (just my gut feeling).

Any time there is drastic change, there is always some opportunities. I think most agents right now are thinking of expanding into other markets, adding a lot of ancillary products to their arsenal to try to make a living.

In some ways, selling health insurance may get easier. No more underwriting concerns, perhaps less expensive for the person (aka subsidies), more streamlined product line, much less confusion.

Problem is, nobody yet knows if you will get paid for writing a subsidized policy, and even if you are, can you make a living at it?

Get your crystal ball out and pick an answer. I personally would not recommend selling health as a new great career move, but as I said, when there is change, there is opportunity.

To see the trend, one need only look at the states (MA, NY, NJ, VT, ME) where this approach is already in play.

Hint: it ain't good.

Since you have no skin in the game at this point, I would look else where. Med supps should be safe for a while, but I think those will eventually find the same fate as well (only my guess). If I was starting from scratch and wanted to be in the insurance business, I would go one of two directions: P&C or Life/Securities.

Life is the way to go. Get with someone that will train you and give you respectable comissions. You can make great money only working a few days a week

I agree that life may be a decent opportunity, though it's not for everyone. The big problem I see with life (and somewhat P&C) is the increased number of agents focusing on it due to decreased health commissions.

It will make a crowded field a lot more crowded. The right person can still do very well.

This always tickles me.

When internet sales of insurance came into existence, we were supposed to be out...

When banks were allowed to sell life insurance, we were supposed to be out....

For every agent who is exiting the industry now, based simply on what might be, in some unknown form, that is one less competitor for me to deal with. For every new agent who takes the advice to to some other form of insurance, based simply on what might be, that is one less competitor for me.

Let me save you some trouble. Rather than worry about insurance, slap a Tahitian Noni magnet on your car door, put a PrePaid Legal Decal on your back window, and start selling the new Egnite energy drink, in conjunction with Ignite Gas Service, where you can make money everytime someone turns on the gas at home.

Thank you, guys. I needed a good laugh.
