Just Passed Test and a Little Confused

This site is great. I know there is so much info here. I have a few questions and don't shoot me for asking them lol.. First, how does one choose between selling life or health.?When I speak to the health brokers, they say health is easiest place to start and fastest way to earn. When I spoke to a life agent , he disagreed . The health agent, yourhealthplan.org. requires you to pay $495 up front for unlimited warm leads . YOu also have to apply with the particular companies.. like Anthem.. I live in San diego. The life company, insurancewholesalers.com. charges $26.00 for a warm lead and $4.00 for a colder lead and they get 30% of the commission. They are pushing life but insist that we call it mortgage protection when we get into the home of the client that just bought a home or just refied.
Are there any companies that pay a salary plus a comm. so I know I might not be getting ripped off.. The life agency that charges for the leads said the leads were free years ago, but not now.. with the poor economy. I'd like to make a lot of money and am very good salesperson and a closer, ANy ideas how to get a job where i can earn without being possibly ripped off or paying too much. I know that in time. I;ll learn.. I just thought I;d learn from the mistakes others on the forum made.. if that is ok.. thank you very much.

Congrats on passing the test. If you are good at sales, you should do just fine. Take the time to educate your clients. I promise, if you are an honest agent, you'll run into a lot of clients who have policies which aren't what they think (at least in the life ins realm).

As far as who to go with, the OP was right, that thread is a good thread and will show you some of the options out there. Read through it carefully, you'll notice that there are a few different perspectives clashing!

The reality is that you will need leads. The question, is, are you going to generate them on your own? Or are you going to trust that to someone else. When you look through that thread, you'll know where I stand.

Life vs. Health? Up to you. I chose life because it is simple. If I can't stand talking to my health insurance company or even thinking about what benefits I have and what I don't have, what makes me think that I'd want to sell the junk? This is seriously just a personal dislike....you could do great with Health. AND, if I took the time to learn more about it, I could do well there as well. I just plain and simply don't like the industry. I'll sell Med Supps as a cross-sell to my FE clients, but it is not a focus for my business. :skeptical:

Good Luck and don't quit! It's a rewarding business.

This business is a lot of trial and error..

It is kind of liking becoming a doctor. You will have to learn a little bit of everything...but in time, you will just focus on 1 field. But you can still do everything else.

WHen you are talking about Health vs Life....It really just depends on you. But you can also do both.

Salary plus comission??? To be honest, very few companies put much value on a person that just got his lic...Agents are a dime a dozen right now. Most of the captive companies are just talking you into selling your friends and family and then they get rid of you.

Let me ask you some questions. WHy did you get in this business and what was you plan after you passed the test. Did you just say, I will pass the test and then figure out what to do or did you have a plan?

Find some good books, mags on insurance, go to some training meetings that people offer for free..find you a mentor...interview some agents that are successful...

This is a career,,,not a job....Invest time, money and hard work into it.
