I am new to the business, however not new to selling products. I am looking for a broker to start of my career. I am more so looking towards to independent side rather than a captive agent. What broker in the San Antonio area would be a good place to start?

It would be helpful if you told us what you would like to sell.

Just some general information for you to consider. If you are talking to a "broker/agency" be very careful and make sure you totally understand what they are saying and asking you to sign.

Again depending on what you want to sell, I would never, ever consider assigning my commissions to anyone under any circumstances regardless of the promises they make. The "promises" will almost always be hollow ones and in my experience almost never benefit the agent in the long run.

You probably already know that.

Thanks for the information. I am interested in selling auto, home, and comm. Not so interested in life or health.

Looking for an agency that can help with training and education that wil allow me to grow in this business. I am very eager to start. Jump in with both feet.

Spend a ton of time reading the forum. Literally read all the threads you can. You're lucky that you found this site because it really does provide a wealth of information.

Once you've read everything you need to, I'm sure you'll have a good idea of what direction you want to go in. It worked for me...

I'd consider checking in with USAA and being captive for a year or two. You might even enjoy working for them. I have a few friends that work for them and are happy. If nothing else you can earn decent money while learning about the lines of business you're interested in. Starting as independent from scratch is really tough. You can expect it to take 6 months to a year to even figure out your marketing plan the companies you want to appoint with, contracts, etc. Many people go broke by that point.

Go captive. Put together a "war chest" - a few thousand dollars in savings - and then consider whether you want to take the risk of going independent.

Just my 2 cents.
