Keyword Research and SEO

I hired an seo pro/ web designer a while back. I trust him to pick the keywords we compete for and his judgement as to which will profitable. We have done okay so far, but I'm curious if we could be doing better. Are their any tools that help judge local search volume- obviously other than keyword planner?

I would be interested to see if their are better keywords we could go after locally and I don't have the skills/ expertise to cross reference what he does.

Thank you

How thin is your niche or sub-niche? Off the top of my head, I would invest in a higher authority domain so you naturally rank for more keywords without any additional linkbuilding, or keyword overoptimization.

I have a solid domain- it has life insurance in it, which is the primary "sales goal" of the site and were ranking for a couple decent keywords. I'm wondering if there are better keywords that could drive more traffic/leads? Or other way to drive traffic other than ppc or seo?

Thanks for your response.

By niche/ sub niche do you mean volume or what I'm trying to accomplish?

Yeah, have you pooled all the search data for all the kw's your trying to hit? like the main head term and all the longtails?

No I haven't. I would like to optimize for as many kw's as needed. My seo guy says that cities name with life insurance are the best bet.

Example: Atlanta life insurance

I would like to have all of the long tails too.

Ex: life insurance for diabetics in GA...etc. His argument is that they either are not searched or that the volume is too low. That why I was asking about the possibility of other tools aside from the kw planner. Thanks for your responses. Or is it a guessing game now?

FYI, having the word insurance in the domain really doesn't matter anymore, what matters more is the authority of the domain
