Looking at a Career Change..

Good Evening.

Last week Federal Financial Group called me off my resume on Monster.com, something that doesn't happen often. They wanted me to do a conference info call / Webinar thing this coming Wednesday for Insurance. Looking at them it appears to me they do health which might explain the call. For the past 23 years I've done EMS and Medical Transportation.

I'm in my mid-40's, a bit credit score challenged thanks to the economy down turns and lost income, and the physical nature of my job is becoming an issue due to injuries.

So to the questions part of this diatribe!

Is insurance a sales field you can do as a second job until that income over takes the current one? I'm not adverse to long hours and my current position allows me days and evenings.

What types of lines would be good to consider starting out?

Does anyone have recent experience with FFG they might like to share? I still need to do a more thorough search of the forums. Any questions that I should be sure to ask that may not be obvious to a newbie?

As I said my background is primarily prehospital emergency services, and our family did run a business for several years so have that background.

Also I'm in Massachusetts if that helps.

Thanks for any feed back!

Rich

Your post posed a complex set of questions about health insurance sales, until I read a line at the bottom that said,
Also I'm in Massachusetts if that helps. Rich

You probably won't be selling health insurance in MA! It's non-commissionable.

I don't know anything about Federal Financial Group, but I just googled the name, and it says it is Life Insurance, Annuities, and other financial products.

Hey, why wouldn't someone in medical transport be good at life insurance sales?

In answer to your questions -
YES. You can make money on the side while retaining your current income, until you reach a point where your new career sustains your lifestyle. This particular employer may be only looking for full-time agents, but other employers will gladly accept part-timers who want a career change.

YES. Your background in medical emergency care would be good for life insurance sales, because it takes an understanding of medical terminology to understand underwriting.

YES. Your background in a family business would be to your benefit

YES. Becoming involved in an insurance career at age 40 is a plus.

NO. Being credit score challenged does not exclude you from insurance sales, but it could certainly pose problems, particularly in the financial area such as life insurance, annuities, etc.

Good luck!

I started doing insurance part-time while I was working full-time as a medic...and my motivation was mostly because the 24 hour shifts were beginning to wear on me. In order to pay my bills, I would work several shifts in a row and be gone for 2-3 days at a time.

I now do insurance full-time and work on the truck every once in awhile if I get bored. I make in an hour what I used to make in 24 hours.

You are already prepared for dealing with stressful situations and relying on yourself to handle a wide range of issues, so you will not have too much trouble transitioning to insurance. Everything is all about education and motivation, and it will be up to you to manage both!
